Project Background
Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are information providing the status of a patient’s health outcomes that comes directly from the patient, without interpretation of that patient’s response by a clinician or anyone else. PROs are relevant to clinical care and research but are not routinely available in electronic form.
To address this challenge, this project was conducted in partnership with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
Project Dates
This project began in 2017 and ended in 2019.
Project Goals
The goals of the project were to:
- Identify barriers related to electronic capture of PROs;
- Develop technical specifications to improve electronic capture of PROs;
- Test the technical specifications in clinical settings using electronic health record systems;
- Communicate challenges and successes related to implementing the technical specifications; and
- Identify gaps in technical specifications and suggest improvements.
As part of the project, ONC developed and pilot-tested an implementation specification based on Health Level Seven International® (HL7®) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources® (FHIR®) in two organizations. The organizations tested the specification in different environments for different use cases and provided feedback to continue refinement of the specification.
