Health Information Technology Advisory Committee (HITAC) History & Highlights

What is the HITAC?

The Health Information Technology Advisory Committee (HITAC) was established in the 21st Century Cures Act (Cures Act) and is governed by the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) which sets forth standards for the formation and use of federal advisory committees.

What does the HITAC do?

The HITAC recommends to the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology policies, standards, implementation specifications, and certification criteria. HITAC has focused on five target areas as defined in the Cures Act: Design and Use of Technologies that Advance Health Equity, Use of Technologies that Support Public Health, Interoperability, Privacy and Security, and Patient Access to Information.
