Why did you pursue an employment opportunity with HHS through the Pathways to Public Service program?

HHS serves our country in many capacities, all of which aim to improve the lives members of our most vulnerable populations. As a veteran and former public educator, I have always been driven to provide service. It is inspiring, and I consider it an honor to have been chosen to be a Pathways intern.

What most excites you about this Pathways to Public Service internship?

The most exciting part is knowing I am contributing, even in the smallest ways, to something I believe in. I am learning so much!

How has your university/major prepared you for the work you will be doing within your agency?

My program in the School of Education at the University of Mississippi prepares leaders to understand and influence the dynamics of organizations so we can create constructive advancement with special regard for improvements in equity and accountability. It is apparent to me that HHS in general and the Office of Refugee Resettlement in particular invites such leadership to better serve the American public.

How did the Pathways program help you navigate your federal career with HHS? (Tell us about mentors you had, events you attended, resources shared, interviews, and the hiring process)

Currently, I am an intern in the Pathways program and find that the resources are endless! Sara Tompkins’ leadership and Emily Nesheim’s mentorship have been invaluable. Team members like Diane Baird, Amanda Beyer, Jane Trejo, Dan Creed, Lindsay Shah, and Carrie McAvoy have been so welcoming and helpful. In addition, new employee orientation administrators, the SROC help desk staff, and travel specialists like Rube Hollis and Dishon Tucker have been amazing! OCIO has several trainings available on Live Now, too. My experience with the program can only contribute to a possible permanent position in HHS.
